Burden and Flame is a sculptural ceramic candle holder that entwines mythology, weight, and ritual. A seated figure carries a vertical pillar upon its head—at once altar and burden—culminating in a dish-like platform for holding a flame. Around the rising stem, organic textures and abstracted beasts cling and spiral, echoing the tension between devotion and strain.
Hand-built without molds and fired at high temperatures, this piece is both symbolic and functional. It reflects Darren Dai’s Taoist approach to material: letting emotion and form emerge naturally through touch and process. Each surface imperfection is a gesture of life—fragile, weight-bearing, luminous.
