This lobed ceramic vessel was built entirely by hand—pinched, pressed, and shaped without molds—allowing each curve and edge to carry the direct imprint of Darren Dai’s process. The petal-like opening recalls classical Chinese vase forms, yet its textured surface and irregular rhythm speak of erosion, emergence, and time.
Clay is not treated here as a passive material, but as a living substance. Fired at high temperatures yet retaining its organic rawness, the piece reflects the artist’s Taoist sensibility: to let form arise, rather than be imposed.
Each vessel is singular. Its imperfections are not flaws, but traces—of touch, of thought, of stillness in motion.

SMOGE SPACE
Founded by Zhiyuan Zhu and joined by Lin Cai in 2019, SMOGE SPACE creates textured black ceramics that blur the line between sculpture and vessel. Hand-thrown, carved, and glazed in matte black, each piece is fired at 1280°C. Rooted in quiet power and restraint, their work channels Chinese cosmology where black symbolizes wisdom, depth, and flow.

Darren Dai
Darren Dai is a ceramic sculptor whose practice bridges Chinese mythology, ecology, and minimalist design. Inspired by Han Dynasty sculpture and Taoist symbolism, his works evoke stillness, transformation, and balance. Using reclaimed clay, he crafts collectible ceramic art rooted in sustainability, cultural heritage, and contemporary Chinese aesthetics.

Dahua Yin
Born in Wuxi and trained at Tsinghua and Central Saint Martins, Dahua Yin creates sculptural furniture rooted in Chinese craft and modern structure. Raised in a family of woodworkers, his work explores tension between memory and material, order and disruption.
